Phil's Boat
The Mission
Today Cambridge, tomorrow Australia!
This website is to inform you about my project to build an autonomous
sailing boat to make the trip from the UK to Australia. This boat is under a
metre long, and will be self-sufficient throughout the voyage. It will be
steered by a combination of GPS and compass, operating the rudder. The
“brains” for the control is provided by an Arduino. To tell the world where
it is, it can transmit messages to the Iridium network, and will
periodically transmit its latitude and longitude. There is no control of the
sail setting: for simplicity it is fixed at the start of the journey. Power
for the electronics comes from solar panels on the deck.
As time permits, I will add reports on progress of building the boat,
writing the control software, and sorting out the electrics and electronics.
